top 10 tips for choosing your wedding photographer

So, your at the stage where you need to start researching into the right wedding photographer for your wedding day! It's SO exciting but choosing the right wedding photographer is SO important! With an oversaturated market how on earth do you choose? There are so many to choose from, all with different styles and budgets to suit everyone! You may go on recommendation from a friend or perhaps you've been to a wedding and you loved the vibe from the wedding photographer and would love them to photograph your wedding day! But if you aren't sure who to choose and you want to research yourself I have put together MY top 10 tips for choosing a wedding photographer.

ONE: Define YOUR style! What style of photography would you like? There are many different options out there. My style is romantic, emotive and storytelling. I want to document your day from start to finish like a story, I want you to FEEL the emotion when you look through your photos and I want to capture the romance. It's your wedding day, emotions will be high and LOVE is in the air! I will be there quietly in the background documenting this! I am mainly shooting candid photos throughout the day, however at bridal prep I can start the day with some creativity. I will photograph any special items you have left for me to photograph for detail shots, this may be flowers, jewellery, bridal shoes and perfume. Once the bride is ready we can take bridal shots before leaving for the ceremony. Later in the day you typically would do the group shots and couple portraits which are more posed but still completely natural looking and fun!

Other styles of photography can be totally candid with no posed images at all, you can have a documentary style, traditional or editorial. It's pretty overwhelming right? BUT which images or style are YOU more drawn to? Do you look at them and think 'yes' I want photos like this! Is the photographer a quiet person, a loud person? What vibe do you prefer? I am more on the quieter side, I'm not a loud personality so if you want someone who is more 'soft' and who has a non-obtrusive approach then I might be a great fit for you! You just have to decide the style and type of person you would like, after all they are with you all day on the biggest day of your life, you need to feel comfortable and happy around them!

TWO: Do your research! With so many options out there, googling 'wedding photographer' will produce hundreds of wedding photographers in your area. Whittle them down and then shortlist the ones you really love. Check their social media pages, Facebook and Instagram to see if there is extra content on there to view or if there are any behind the scenes videos to watch and help you decide.

THREE: Set a budget! Everyone sets different budgets for their wedding photography, set the budget your happy with. This will then help you make decisions. Most wedding photographers have the information on their website with 'starting prices'. This will help you save time by not having to enquire with every single one you love because they may be out of budget. But please remember the old saying 'you get what you pay for!'

FOUR: Meet with a handful of favourite photographers! Meeting in person is such a great way, to build a connection, feel the vibe and you'll almost instantly know if you'll be a good match. Most photographers offer a non-obligation free chat to meet and have a chat. Once you've met with a few this should make the decision easier!

FIVE: Ask about their experience! You can find this out usually on their website on the 'about me' page. Or if you meet in person you can ask then. Having years of experience is always a plus for a wedding, they have 'been there done that' so many times and will have encountered any common problems that may crop up during a wedding. Knowing you have a professional photographer with years of experience will reduce your anxieties and you will go into your wedding feeling confident!

SIX: Discuss packages and pricing, make sure that everything is clear and you know how much it is and when payments will be due. How many hours will they be with you, how many images you will get. Making sure everything is clear from the beginning will enable you to understand what you're getting for your investment.

SEVEN: Check for insurance! Please make sure your wedding photographer has public liability insurance! This protects both of you in the case of any unforeseen incidents. I am insured for public liability, professional indemnity and for my equipment.

EIGHT: Check out their portfolio! Ask to view full galleries. Sure their Instagram portfolio looks great but what does a finished gallery look like? Your photographer should be able to show you full galleries so you can see a wedding day from start to finish.

NINE: Trust your gut! Once you've met with your wedding photographer, ask yourself how do you feel? Are you super excited at the prospect of having them capture your day or are you unsure? You know what feels right, and if they tick every box then go for it!

TEN: Please always make sure you read your contract fully before signing it to make sure you are happy with everything in it. This protects both parties and is SO important! Ask questions if you are unsure so you can make sure you're happy with it before signing.
